As we reach the end of another decade of riding ATVs, more and more people will be hitting the deserts of the south west to enjoy themselves with their families. That means now is the time to be diligent about ATV safety and responsibility. Keeping a few things in mind will help make your ATV trips safer and more fun. Remember to ALWAYS wear a helmet. Ride the appropriate sized ATV Don’t ride double Don’t ride on pavement Don’t ride under the influence Supervise kids under 16 If you’re a new rider, or you have kids that ride, some states require safety certification for either the parent, the child or both. The All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute (ASI) provides extensive rider-training courses and does a great job of getting kids trained about ATV safety and responsibility. Enjoy the new year and be safe. BLM Wants to Permanently Close Clear Creek OHV Area
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) wants to close yet another ATV offroading area, the Clear Creek OHV Park. Clear Creek offers numerous trails and roads that are clearly marked and there are several types of riding available there from very simple to highly technical. The BLM wants to close the area, it says, because of issues like naturally occurring asbestos and because of previous mining operations in the area. It seeks to manage livestock grazing, offroad vehicle activity, non-motorized activity, acquisition and the potential for energy development. There are several OHV and offroading groups that are fighting this proposed land grab, including the AMA District 36, The BlueRibbon Coalition, California Off Road Vehicle Association (COVRA), California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs and others. The BLM is allowing public comment on the proposed closure of Clear Creek until March 5, 2010 in writing and at public meetings which will be held in January from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at: * January 13, 2010: Harris Ranch Garden Ballroom, 24505 W. Jeep Wrangler’s Rag-Top Helps Save a Life After Accident, Fire
In a lucky twist of fate, Maryland Firefighters reported that the soft-top on a Jeep Wrangler, which burst into flames after being rear-ended on the Capital Beltway on Route 495 by a semi-truck, played a part in helping on-lookers save the life of the driver. According to Mark E. Brady, Chief Spokesman for Prince Georges Fire/EMS, a 27 year old female was rescued from her Jeep Wrangler by “Good Samaritans” who ripped the soft-top off the vehicle and pulled the woman to safety as the Jeep burned. The impact caused the woman to get disoriented and her foot got caught under the brake peddle. The rescuers worked together by ripping the roof off the Jeep Wrangler, dislodging the woman’s foot then pulling her through the roof as another person fought back the fire with a fire extinguisher. It always makes me proud to know that firefighters put themselves on the line every day for people they don’t know, and when I hear about every day people doing the same thing, it makes it even better. But I get the feeling that if it weren’t for the soft-top on the Jeep Wrangler the efforts of those brave people would have gone for naught and the driver would not have survived to celebrate Christmas.
