Yamaha Planning to Move ATV Production to US, Bringing Jobs
Yamaha Motor Co. announced their plans to transfer ATV production out of Japan and in to Newnan, Georgia. Still in the planning stages, this move is expected to be completed by 2013 and could create dozens of jobs in the area. The move will transfer the Yamaha Motor Powered Products, Co., operations to the Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of American (YMMC) in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. With the US being one of the biggest ATV markets, moving production here will give Yamaha the ability to respond more quickly to current market needs while it helps the local economy. Risk of Death from ATV Accidents Continues Its Decade of Decline
According to CPSC data, ATV deaths continue to drop. And we’re not just talking about the percentage of deaths either. Over the last 4 years the total number of deaths has gone down, even though there is a constant increase in the number of ATVs in use. Only one time in the last quarter of a century has the risk of death been higher. In 1993, when there were not even 2 million ATVs in use, the risk of death per 10,000 ATVs in use was at .7 percent. The numbers stayed somewhat stable for several years, then seemed to jump in 1999 from .8 to 1.4, then hover around 1.2 to 1.0 up through 2006 even as the number of ATVs in use increased by about half a million or more per year every year topping off at 9.5 million ATVs in use in 2007. Lets hope the youth ATV ban doesn’t turn these positive numbers negative. President Obama’s Budget Set to Slash Funding for ATV and Offroading Riding Areas
In a tough economy everyone has to tighten their belts. The Obama administration seems to be tightening their betls too as they prepare to slash up to 20% of funding that is used for OHV maintenance via the Agriculture Department’s Capital Improvement & Maintenance program. The impact this will have on the availability of places to ride ATVs will be in the form of closed public trails because there is no funding to maintain them. This will greatly limit the number of places families can go to ride ATVs. The timing of this bill is precarious as the Obama administration’s budget cuts are happening at just the wrong time as the Forest Service is planning the fate of 193 million acres of public land, and a lack of funding will certainly mean a large scale closure of public riding areas. Being Safe While Riding Yamaha Rhinos and other Side by Side ATVs
Riding ATVs can be a lot of fun for the entire family. Side by Side ATVs like the Yamaha Rhino are very popular with families who like to go to the desert and spend time riding with each other. But lets face it, anything we do can be dangerous, especially when there’s an engine and humans controlling it. Basic ATV safety equipment like a helmet, gloves, boots and goggles are an important way to help stay safe when riding. These items can protect you in a fall, protect you from flying debris, and protect you from branches and other things you might hit while riding. Just as important as what ATV safety equipment you wear is how you ride. Being responsible while riding an ATV is key to keeping you safe. Not riding on private property, not riding out of your ability to ride safety, and not riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol will lessen your chances of getting hurt or hurting someone else. When you ride, ride by the rules and wear the right equipment. It could mean the difference between a good, safe ride and a trip to the hospital, or worse. MIC Urging Congress to Re-Consider Youth ATV Ban
When I first heard about the youth ATV ban I almost fell over. I couldn’t believe such blatantly bad legislation could be contrived without the slightest thought about the consequences when people were suddenly stripped of the ability to buy small ATVs for kids. I knew the reaction would not be one that would get more kids off ATVs, it would be one of more kids riding adult sized ATVs. Most of us know Why Size Matters on an ATV. And we all know how that’s probably going to work out… The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) knows and is telling Congress what we’ve been saying since the beginning of this entire youth ATV lead ban; that the threat from kids getting lead poisoning is unfounded. Unless, of course, the kids decided to eat the ATVs. So the MIC went to Congress to state their case, and in the process delivered some 4,000 letters from industry professionals who have been impacted by this attempted outright ban on youth ATVs in the Consumper Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). When MIC Chairman Larry Little said in a recent press release: Our Industry has a voice and we believe Congress is hearing us loud and clear. It made me realize how important it is to stop the potential un-doing some of the real progress we’ve made over the last several years when it comes to ATV safety and responsibility.
